A container that is too large means paying for empty space; one that is too small may force you to split your cargo or incur additional costs. What Is a Container and What Is It Used For?

This is the smallest standard container and a popular choice for heavy or medium volume cargo. It has an internal capacity of approximately 33 cubic meters (m³) and can accommodate around 10 standard pallets. Its approximate internal dimensions are 5.89 m long × 2.35 m wide × 2.39 m high, with a maximum payload of approximately 21.7 metric tons (this may vary depending on the shipping line and equipment).

A 40 foot container doubles the length of a 20 foot container, but not its maximum weight capacity. It is ideal for bulky, lightweight cargo. It offers approximately 67 m³ of internal capacity and can accommodate around 22 standard pallets. Its approximate internal dimensions are 12.03 m long × 2.35 m wide × 2.39 m high, with a maximum payload of approximately 26.7 metric tons.
There is also the 40-foot High Cube (HC) container, which maintains the same length and width but adds approximately 30 cm of internal height (reaching ~2.70 m), increasing its capacity to around 76 m³. It is perfect when your cargo takes up a lot of space but is not particularly heavy.

Container Types Based on Your Cargo
Beyond size, there are different container types depending on the nature of the goods:
- Dry (Standard): The most common type, fully enclosed, designed for general dry cargo.
- High Cube: Similar to a standard container but taller, providing additional volume for lightweight cargo.
- Reefer (Refrigerated): Equipped with temperature control for perishables, food, and pharmaceutical products.
- Open Top: Features an open roof, making it suitable for cargo that must be loaded from the top using a crane or cargo that exceeds standard height.
- Flat Rack: A platform without side walls, designed for machinery and oversized cargo.
¿20 o 40 pies? Cómo elegir el correcto
The practical rule is simple: choose based on whichever limit you reach first volume or weight.
- If your cargo is heavy and compact (tiles, liquids, metal spare parts), a 20 foot container is usually sufficient: you will reach the weight limit before running out of space.
- If your cargo is bulky and lightweight (furniture, textiles, plastics), a 40 foot or High Cube container will provide much better efficiency per cubic meter.
- If you cannot fill even a 20 foot container, consolidated cargo (LCL) may be a better option than booking a full container (FCL).
